Overview

Mount Kenya is an extinct volcano which originally rose an estimated 3 million years ago and last erupted an estimated 2.6 million years ago.

Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa after Mt Kilimanjaro, has three highest peaks.Batian Nelion and Lenana.

The highest peak on Mount Kenya is Batian standing at 5199m, the second highest peak is Nelion standing at (5188 m) and both these peaks are technical climbing peaks. Point Lenana is the third highest peak (4985m) and is the second highest trekking peak in Africa.

Standing at 4,985 metres Point Lenana is an achievable trekking peak for most people.The panoramic views of the volcanic peaks, wide valleys, gorges and surrounding savannah makes a climb on this mountain the perfect African trekking experience

Our Hiking Tricks

  • Ski sticks will come in handy during the ascent to the summit.They also help priotect your knees when treading downhill.
  • Filling your bottle at night with hot water provides a comforting heat pad to slip in your bag or beneath your pillow
  • Powdered deink mix/sport’s mix helps with maintaining hydration(Tang,Gatorade,Lemonade)
  • Find a hiking pace you can keep all day
  • Don’t forget to pack some of your favorite snacks for a break on the trail.

 

ACCOMODATION

 

Accommodation on the route is in two person tents or in huts. Choice of lodging is part your preference or part availability.Tents are also erected for you when you arrive although if you want them erected in a particular position it is worth taking charge.

It is also worth noting that huts are generally warmer than tents, however, please note that there may be other trekking parties besides yours in the shelter.

 

ACCLIMATIZATION

This is important as it helps you avoid complications and enjoy your ascent.The Route is planned to optimize height gain although you may still get a headache or feel nauseous.In this case what you should do is hydrate(water) copiously and walk at a very slow pace.

You may also want to use Diamox (a drug) from your doctor which is well proven to help with acclimatization.This is taken as tablets for a few days before and then during your ascent.It is safe and has no side effects.

It is important to remember that one possible effect of attitude is light-headedness and irrational decisions.The danger here is a person who is not well insisting on continuing.Stay on the look out for each other closely.

 

WATER AND HYDRATION

Water is available at several points and should be purified before drinking.Inquire with your guide about the nearest water points. Wasrooms are available in the huts but not in the camps.Some camps have several and so its worth checking for the cleanest.If caught short during the trek,please find a spot as far as possible from the trail and water.Bury your faces and paper

TREKKING FITNESS

There is definitely no avoiding the steep ascents and high attitudes making robust physical fitness a prerequisite for any trip.You will want to consult your physician before undertaking this unforgettable adventure.

 

MOUNTAIN CUISINE

Menu’s for all climbs are specially prepared to provide a balanced diet.Our menu’s consists of fruits,vegetables,plenty of protein and carbohydrates.Our diets are specially selected and are easy to digest in high attitudes.

Dinner’s are typically a main course and a vegetable and salad.Chicken and fish are also served on some days.

Lunch on the trail consists of cold cuts and vegetables laid out on a table so you can make your own sandwich.Fresh hot soup is served after every meal.

Breakfast of your choice:Granola,fried eggs or French toast

 

KITCHEN HYGIENE

Our cooks are specially trained and an experienced chefs.We carefully curate and constantly review our menus.

Our cooks are extremely vigilant as far as hygiene practices in the kitchen are concerned.Please note that your own supply of energy chocolate bars is recommended.

Departure from Nairobi is at 0900hrs from hotel or airport to Nanyuki.The drive takes about 3 and a half hours.There is a brief stop over at the Africana Curio shop for washroom and stretching.Shortly after that break,we drive for another one and a half hours with a brief stop over at the Equator for photographs,then check into our hotel for lunch. After hotel lunch,you can choose to walk and check out Nanyuki town which is famous for its position at the base of Mount Kenya.Infact,most trekkers prefer to spend their first night here so that they can begin their acclimatization and prepare for the Trek the following morning.You are most likely to meet other trekkers who will be going up Mount Kenya or have just concluded their Trekking.An afternoon briefing session for the climb will be held by our guides in preparation for the climb. Dinner and overnight at Nanyuki hotel.
Wake up by 7.30am,have breakfast then board vehicle from the hotel to sirimon gate.Park entry formalities will take about 20-30 minutes and then after that commence the hike to Old Moses Camp(3300m).The ascent from sirimon gate to Old Moses is 690m.Dinner and overnight at Old Moses(Judmair camp)
Old Moses(3300m) and Shiptons Camp(4250m) After the breakfast,we ascend the sirimon track to Likii North valley.We follow the directions for the direct route until we reach the fork after one hour.The Track then becomes a path and swings right and south round the head of a large valley crossing several small streams to reach the crest of the ridge between the ontulili and Likii North Valleys. Ascend the westside if the valley over a ridgethen down the Mackinders valley.It will take roughly 6 hours to reach shipton camp at 4,250M.Dinner and Overnight
Shipton camp (4,250m)to Point Lenana(4,985M) Wake up at 2.00am,have tea and biscuits then leave at 3.00am for the Lenana Summit to watch the Sunrise.This section is a long and hard slog and the patch is indistinct in places.Continue walking across a tough scree,until you come across Harris Tarn.From Harris Tarn,continue up the North Face of point Lenana (4,985M)reaching the summit after about 45 minutes of sunrise at 6.30am. After enjoying the views and taking your pictures,descend down to Mintos Hut (4,250M)for your breakfast.Dinner and Overnight
Chogoria Banda’s-Nairobi After breakfast,an early walk through the forest will take us to chogoria gate then chogoria town for lunch and transfer back to Nairobi,arriving in the late afternoon having conquered Mount Kenya. Please Note: The last 32km stretch from Chogoria Banda’s to the park gate can be waked halfway and the other half,there is a jeep whose cost can be shared between the available clients.This is optional and can be arranged by the guide (cost not included in the package).After chogoria,the transport is provided back in Nairobi arriving in the Afternoon.
